Not just a building site - how our Perry Barr redevelopment is helping the community

Monday 31 January, 2022

We’re rebuilding Perry Barr station and bus interchange. This will give the area better transport facilities and access. But we want the project to help the community in other ways, too.

We’re working with Galliford Try, a construction company, at Perry Barr. They want to make a positive difference to the community. One way they do this is by inspiring young people to see construction as a profession. They’re offering local people work experience to see what construction is all about.

Ryan Chauhan enjoyed a work experience placement at Perry Barr in September. He’s a Year 13 student at WMG Engineering Academy in Coventry. He spent 7 days at the site, spread out over 2 weeks.

Ryan worked with a range of different people, including site managers and engineers. He says, “I learnt a lot about the redevelopment of Perry Barr station. I especially enjoyed working on site with the team. The work experience plan that was set for me provided me with the opportunity to learn so much. I am eager to build upon the hands-on, real-life experience they provided. I will look forward to visiting the station when the redevelopment programme comes to an end, hopefully when I make my way to Alexandra Stadium during the Commonwealth Games.”

Galliford Try is registered with the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS). This is a not-for-profit, independent organisation. It aims to raise standards in the construction industry. Constructors that sign up have to follow the CCS Code of Practice. This means they have to:

  • care about the appearance of their sites and workforce
  • respect the and support the local community
  • protect the environment
  • care about safety - of the workforce, visitors and the general public
  • value their workforce

Galliford Try is highly rated within the CCS, which measures constructors based on how they score against this code. Galliford Try’s score is 41.4, which is above the industry average of 37.1.
