How local children are helping us celebrate key workers

Covid has touched all our lives over the past 18 months. We're grateful that key workers have been there to make the difficult times a little easier.

To say thank you, we've put up artwork at Perry Barr and University station. It was created by children from James Brindley Academy. The school teaches at hospitals across Birmingham.

The artwork recognises some of the ways key workers have helped us, including:

• providing healthcare
• making sure we can get our groceries
• keeping us moving on the buses, trains and trams
• educating our children
• delivering our parcels and mail

Perry Barr and University stations are currently being redeveloped as part of the West Midlands Rail Programme. They will make a huge difference to passengers by increasing capacity and improving facilities.

The key worker artwork features alongside graphics showing how the new stations will connect people to:

• education and research
• friends and family
• sport
• healthcare
• nature
• art

Rachel, the art teacher at James Brindley Academy, said: 

"We were very excited to get involved in the Key Worker Project. Most of our pupils work with key workers every day, so this project was very close to their hearts. They created a range of designs and are looking forward to seeing their work displayed for the public to view."

One pupil said, "I thanked my teachers who supported me to learn at school and virtually at home in lockdown." And another explained, "I chose bright colours for my design to thank my nurse."
